A Game of Thrones ÔÇö Bran III

In his long sleep Bran falls through darkness while a three-eyed crow shows him the whole realm ÔÇö and the heart of winter; he wakes, broken but alive.

The chapter retold

Deep in his coma, Bran falls endlessly through darkness in a dream that feels realer than waking life, guided by a three-eyed crow that shows him glimpses of the whole broken realm ÔÇö his father in a dungeon, his brother marching to war, a wall of ice under a sky gone entirely to winter. When he finally wakes, weeks after his fall, he is alive but changed, his legs forever useless beneath him, though something in him ÔÇö the crow's visitor's-eye view of the world ÔÇö has started to open in compensation.

The vision chapter is the book's clearest early signal that its supernatural machinery, mostly kept off-page since the prologue, runs through Bran specifically. His crippling is presented at first purely as tragedy ÔÇö the active, climbing boy reduced to a body he can no longer trust ÔÇö but the crow's visit reframes the injury as also a doorway, the first hint that Bran's story will run on entirely different rules than his siblings', watching the realm from angles no map can show.
