The Hand's tourney that Ned tried and failed to prevent turns violent almost immediately: the mysterious knight of the laughing tree teases aside, the real spectacle is Gregor Clegane, the Mountain, running Ser Hugh of the Vale through the throat with a splintered lance in the very first tilt ÔÇö silencing, permanently, the one man who might have explained why Jon Arryn had gone looking for a squire's memories before he died. Later in the day, when Gregor turns his fury on his own younger brother Sandor in the lists, it is the Hound who steps in to protect Loras Tyrell, and afterward, in a rare unguarded moment, tells Sansa the true story of the burns that cover half his face ÔÇö his brother held him down in a brazier as a child, and no one in House Clegane ever answered for it.
Sansa's storybook idea of chivalry takes a battering across the whole day: the splendor of the tourney is real, the violence underneath it is realer, and the Hound's confession ÔÇö offered to a girl he has no obvious reason to trust ÔÇö reveals a version of cruelty that isn't a stranger's crime but a family's original sin, passed down and never punished. It's the first time Sansa is treated to an adult's unfiltered truth instead of a knight's polished performance, and it lands harder than any lance.
Underneath the pageantry, the tourney is also the day Ned's investigation loses its best living witness: Ser Hugh, once Jon Arryn's own squire, dies before anyone thinks to ask him what he knew, in a manner clean enough to pass for accident and convenient enough that Ned can't help wondering whether it was. Whether Gregor's lance found Ser Hugh's throat by chance or by design, the effect is the same ÔÇö one more door in the murder investigation slams shut, and the Hand's tourney that was meant to be Ned's honor turns out to cost him information he can never get back.
