The recruits are called: Jon is named to the stewards, not the rangers ÔÇö rage first, until Sam shows him whose squire he has just become.
The chapter retold
The commander of the Night's Watch reads out the postings for Jon's class of recruits, and Jon ÔÇö trained since childhood by Winterfell's own master-at-arms, plainly the most skilled swordsman among his fellow recruits ÔÇö is named not to the rangers he'd set his heart on but to the stewards, effectively Lord Commander Mormont's own squire. His first response is fury, reading the posting as an insult, a soft desk job handed to him instead of the frontline duty he'd earned. It's Sam who talks him down, pointing out what Jon's pride has kept him from seeing: stewards to a Lord Commander are groomed to lead, and Mormont has just quietly marked Jon as his likely successor.
The scene reworks one of the book's recurring lessons ÔÇö that the job nobody wants often turns out to be the job that matters ÔÇö through Jon's specific blind spot, his need to prove himself through combat rather than administration. Sam's read on the situation, delivered gently rather than as a lecture, becomes one of the more important pieces of guidance Jon receives in the whole book, redirecting him away from a grudge that would have cost him the very trust Mormont was extending.
