A Game of Thrones ÔÇö Tyrion VIII

Battle on the Green Fork: Tyrion's clansmen hold the van, he survives his own side's charge ÔÇö and learns the captive Stark boy was a feint.

The chapter retold

On the Green Fork, Tywin's vanguard crashes into what looks like Robb Stark's main army, and Tyrion's mountain clansmen are placed in the vanguard to bear the worst of it ÔÇö a battle Tyrion barely survives, knocked briefly unconscious by his own side's cavalry charge and coming to only after the worst of the fighting has passed him by. When the dust settles and the captives are counted, the bitter truth of the engagement emerges: the Stark boy commanding the northern host on this field was never Robb at all, but a decoy, and the real Robb Stark and the bulk of his strength struck somewhere else entirely while Tywin's attention was fixed here.

It's Tyrion's first real taste of large-scale battle, and the book uses it to strip away any lingering romance about warfare ÔÇö he survives not through glory but through the chaos and blind luck of being trampled and overlooked rather than killed outright, waking up to discover he was a hero of the wrong fight. The revelation of the decoy is the first proof the book gives that the boy king in the North is not simply brave but genuinely, dangerously clever ÔÇö willing to sacrifice a battle to win the war, at a cost Tywin's camp is only now starting to reckon with.
