A Game of Thrones ÔÇö Bran VII

Bran and Rickon share a dream of their father in the crypts; when they go down with Maester Luwin, the raven's letter is already flying north.

The chapter retold

In Winterfell, Bran and Rickon share the same dream on the same night ÔÇö their father, standing in the crypts among the stone kings, looking at them with something like farewell in his eyes. Unsettled, they go down into the crypts with Maester Luwin to see for themselves that nothing is wrong, even as, unbeknownst to any of them yet, a raven is already in the air carrying the news that will confirm the dream was never just a dream at all.

It's a rare moment of the book's supernatural undercurrent surfacing gently rather than violently ÔÇö no wights, no visions of ice, just two boys sharing a warning neither of them can name, delivered through blood and instinct rather than magic anyone in the story would recognize as such. The raven already in flight, mentioned before its message is even read, is the book's own quiet cruelty: the reader knows what's coming before Bran does, and there's nothing to do but watch him walk down into the dark to meet it.
