The WatchÔÇÖs ranging pushes deeper into the haunted forest, past WhitetreeÔÇÖs hollow weirwood with its carved red face, and finds more of what chapter seven promised: villages emptied without a fight, no bodies, no signs of struggle, just absence. Two hundred rangers move through country that should hold eight thousand wildlings by MormontÔÇÖs own count, and the silence gets less explicable with every mile.

ItÔÇÖs a chapter built entirely out of accumulating wrongness rather than incident ÔÇö no battle, no revelation, just the growing certainty among seasoned rangers that something has cleared this land of people, and that whatever did it wasnÔÇÖt Mance RayderÔÇÖs army passing through peacefully. The dread here is procedural, which is exactly what makes it effective: professionals who donÔÇÖt spook easily are spooked.
