A Clash of Kings ÔÇö Bran II
The harvest feast fills Winterfell's hall; among the guests come Meera and Jojen Reed of Greywater Watch, who swear the old oath of the crannogmen.
The chapter retold
WinterfellÔÇÖs harvest feast fills the hall properly for once, and among the guests come two children out of the crannogs ÔÇö Meera and Jojen Reed of Greywater Watch, sworn by the old bond between their houses to answer a StarkÔÇÖs call. They are strange even by BranÔÇÖs generous standards: Jojen speaks of green dreams with the flat certainty of someone who has never once been wrong, and Bran, who has been having wolf-dreams he canÔÇÖt explain, recognizes a kindred oddity immediately.
The ReedsÔÇÖ arrival is the chapterÔÇÖs real event ÔÇö not the feast, which is mostly relief and pageantry, but the quiet promise that someone has finally come who might explain whatÔÇÖs happening to Bran rather than simply worrying about it. JojenÔÇÖs greensight gives BranÔÇÖs private, frightening gift a vocabulary for the first time, and the crannogmenÔÇÖs old oath to the Starks becomes, by the bookÔÇÖs end, one of the more consequential debts called in during the whole war.
