Tyrion spends this chapter doing the unglamorous work statecraft actually requires: negotiating Doran Martell’s price for Dornish support, paying Bronn’s price for muscle and loyalty, and confronting a starving city’s price, which is no price at all — just hunger with nowhere left to send its anger but the Red Keep’s gates. Three transactions, three different currencies, and Tyrion moves between them with the fluency of a man who has never had the luxury of assuming people act out of love rather than leverage.

The chapter is a portrait of what holding a besieged, half-starved capital together actually looks like from the inside — not battles, but bargains, and the growing awareness that the city’s hunger is a fuse Tyrion can delay but not defuse. Every deal struck here buys time rather than safety, a distinction the book will collect on before long.
