The Watch’s great ranging finally reaches the Fist of the First Men, an ancient ringfort where Mormont decides to make camp and take stock. Under a pile of ashes, Ghost noses out something that makes Sam’s blood run cold — an old cloak wrapped carefully around a stash of dragonglass daggers, hidden by hands unknown for a purpose everyone can guess at.
It’s a small, quiet discovery that lands like a thunderclap once its implications sink in: someone, at some point, thought it worth hiding weapons specifically effective against the Others out here in the middle of nowhere. The Fist itself, ancient and defensible, becomes the ranging’s forward base — a decision that will look wiser and then far more dangerous as the book’s northern plot builds toward its climax.
