By night, Bran and Rickon slip quietly out of the crypts they never actually left ÔÇö the story of their escape from Winterfell has been a fiction maintained since TheonÔÇÖs conquest, the two boys hidden below ground with Hodor, Osha and the direwolves while the castle above believes them fled. Theon, desperate for a story that saves face, needs bodies to prove his missing princes are dead rather than admit two children have simply vanished from under his nose.
The deception the chapter builds is precarious and morally costly even in its cleverness ÔÇö hiding successfully means someone else may have to pay for the lieÔÇÖs plausibility. TheonÔÇÖs mounting panic, unable to produce what he needs and unwilling to admit failure to his own men, sets up one of the bookÔÇÖs darkest turns, still a few chapters off but already visible in the shape of his desperation here.
