On a rooftop as StannisÔÇÖs fleet burns closer to the city, Sandor Clegane finds Sansa and, in his blunt, unsentimental way, tells her the truth about killing ÔÇö what it actually looks like, what it costs, why the songs she loves lie about all of it. ItÔÇÖs one of the most intimate scenes the two of them share, the HoundÔÇÖs usual contempt for gentility replaced, briefly, with something like honesty offered as a gift.
Sansa responds the only way she knows how, humming a song to herself even as he insists the songs are lies ÔÇö not defiance exactly, more a refusal to let him take away the last comfort she has left. The chapter captures the strange, asymmetrical bond between them at its clearest: a frightened girl and a violent, self-loathing man, each offering the other something neither quite knows how to receive.
