As the chain rises and the river burns behind Stannis’s shattered vanguard, the Hound — steady through years of violence — finally breaks, the sight and stench of wildfire triggering a terror he cannot master through sheer will alone. With Joffrey fled from the walls and no one else willing to take the field, someone has to lead the desperate sortie out to meet Stannis’s landing forces, and the someone left standing is Tyrion, three feet shorter than anyone else who might have done it.

It’s the book’s clearest vindication of everything Tyrion has built across the siege — not a battle won by size or title, but by a man who spent chapters preparing exactly this contingency finally forced to execute it himself, in person, sword in hand. The moment is both his triumph and the beginning of his ruin: leading from the front is the bravest thing he does in the whole war, and it’s about to cost him more than anyone in that army will ever properly credit.
