As the chain rises and the river burns behind StannisÔÇÖs shattered vanguard, the Hound ÔÇö steady through years of violence ÔÇö finally breaks, the sight and stench of wildfire triggering a terror he cannot master through sheer will alone. With Joffrey fled from the walls and no one else willing to take the field, someone has to lead the desperate sortie out to meet StannisÔÇÖs landing forces, and the someone left standing is Tyrion, three feet shorter than anyone else who might have done it.
ItÔÇÖs the bookÔÇÖs clearest vindication of everything Tyrion has built across the siege ÔÇö not a battle won by size or title, but by a man who spent chapters preparing exactly this contingency finally forced to execute it himself, in person, sword in hand.
