A Storm of Swords ÔÇö Davos V
The Hand who can barely read learns his letters beside Edric Storm ÔÇö and reads in Melisandre's fires exactly what she wants of king's blood.
The chapter retold
On Dragonstone, Davos Seaworth ÔÇö a smuggler who never had cause to learn his letters ÔÇö sits beside young Edric Storm, Robert Baratheon's acknowledged bastard, and finally starts learning to read, a small, humanizing thread of ordinary life running alongside the war's much larger machinery. The lessons matter more than they first appear: reading lets Davos start piecing together, in Melisandre's own fire-visions and writings, exactly what she intends to do with king's blood ÔÇö and Edric Storm's blood in particular.
The chapter quietly arms Davos with the specific knowledge he will need to act later, turning a tender scene between an unlikely tutor and student into a slow-fuse plot point. Melisandre's plans for Edric are never stated outright here, but the shape of the danger is clear enough that the reader, like Davos, starts counting down.
