A Storm of Swords ÔÇö Tyrion X

The Viper against the Mountain for Tyrion's life: Oberyn dances, demands a confession, and gets it ÔÇö with his skull in Gregor's fists.

The chapter retold

Tyrion Lannister's life comes down to a duel he cannot fight himself: Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper, stands as his champion against Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain, fighting for Cersei and, by extension, for the verdict the court has already decided on. Oberyn is faster, more skilled, and utterly focused on something beyond simply winning ÔÇö he wants, before Gregor dies, a confession: that the Mountain raped and murdered Elia Martell and killed her children on Tywin Lannister's orders during the Sack of King's Landing.

He gets it. Oberyn wounds Gregor again and again, dancing around the bigger man's exhausted swings, demanding the truth with every cut until Gregor, dying, finally says Elia's name and admits everything Dorne has spent sixteen years wanting to hear spoken aloud. It should be the end of the fight and the end of the danger ÔÇö and then Oberyn, savoring the victory a beat too long, lets Gregor's last reserve of strength close a fist around his skull.

Prince Oberyn Martell dies with his vengeance confirmed and his life crushed out of him in the same instant, and Tyrion's trial by combat, which should have exonerated him, condemns him instead by the letter of its own rules ÔÇö his champion is dead, which means Tyrion is guilty, sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit. The chapter is the book's cruelest structural joke: justice achieved and justice denied in the same five minutes, on the same body, in front of the same silent, unmoved court.
