Stannis offers Jon Snow everything: Winterfell, legitimacy, a name ÔÇö for a knee bent to a red god and a godswood put to the torch. The bastard hesitates.

The chapter retold

Stannis Baratheon offers Jon Snow the single largest bribe of his entire life: legitimacy, the Stark name he was always denied, and Winterfell itself to rule as Lord ÔÇö everything Jon has quietly wanted since he was a boy watching his half-siblings inherit a world he could only borrow. The price is total: bend the knee to the Lord of Light, and put Winterfell's godswood, the old gods' last sanctuary in the North, to the torch.

Jon hesitates ÔÇö genuinely, painfully ÔÇö because the offer is not a trap dressed up as temptation but real temptation on its own honest terms, weighed against vows he has already broken once for good reasons and does not want to break again for self-interest, however well-disguised as duty. The chapter leaves the question open, forcing Jon to sit with wanting something Stannis is fully capable of giving him, which is a harder position than simply refusing an obvious bribe would be.
