A Feast for Crows ÔÇö Cersei IV

Maggy the Frog's tent breathes through Cersei's dreams: three children with golden shrouds, a younger queen, and the valonqar's hands about her throat.

The chapter retold

Maggy the Frog's prophecy resurfaces in full in Cersei's memory and dreams ÔÇö the woods witch's tent from her childhood, the promise of three golden-shrouded children, a younger and more beautiful queen to take everything from her, and the valonqar whose hands will close about her throat. Cersei, increasingly convinced that Margaery is the queen the prophecy warned her about, starts treating ordinary court rivalry as an existential, prophesied threat, coloring every decision that follows with a fear she cannot voice to anyone without admitting how much stock she puts in an old woman's curse.

This chapter functions as connective tissue for Cersei's psychology rather than plot event ÔÇö a return to the well the book opened with, deepened now that two of the three children (in the reader's knowledge, if not yet confirmed on the page) are already lost. It cements the prophecy as the true engine of Cersei's paranoia for the rest of the book: not simple cruelty or lust for power, but a woman trying to out-maneuver a fate she believes has already been written, and making it worse with every move.
