Davos Seaworth, sent north by Stannis on a quiet errand, comes ashore at Sisterton in a smugglerÔÇÖs old boots and a lordÔÇÖs borrowed authority, looking for allies for a king whose fortunes have thinned to almost nothing. Lord Godric Borrell of the Sisters receives him with fish stew, old grudges against the mainland houses, and no particular hurry to commit to anyone ÔÇö the Sisters have survived every war in living memory by picking sides late, and Borrell isnÔÇÖt about to break the habit for a knight of onions and a claim that looks more hopeless by the week.

The chapter reintroduces Davos as the storyÔÇÖs most useful kind of nobody ÔÇö a smugglerÔÇÖs son whose low birth lets him go places and ask things a highborn envoy never could, exactly the reason Stannis keeps sending him on the missions that matter most. BorrellÔÇÖs warning about White Harbor, delivered almost as an afterthought, seeds the far more dangerous errand waiting for Davos ahead: Wyman Manderly, the fat lord of a rich port, is a bigger and much more dangerous unknown than a minor island lordÔÇÖs fish stew and grievances.
