Meereen wears its queen uneasily: the Sons of the Harpy write their name in freedmen's blood each night, and out in the hills something has been eating children.
The chapter retold
Daenerys presides over Meereen from a queenÔÇÖs uneasy chair, and the city answers her mercy with knives: the Sons of the Harpy, a hidden resistance of the old slaving families, murder her freedmen and Unsullied in the dark and vanish before dawn, leaving graffiti and corpses as their only signature. Stalwart Shield, one of her own Unsullied, is found with his throat opened ÔÇö the first entry in a ledger of nighttime killings that will only lengthen. Worse arrives in daylight: a Meereenese farmer brings Daenerys the charred bones of his four-year-old daughter, Hazzea, eaten by a dragon in the hills. Dany does not need to ask which one.
The chapter measures the distance between conquering a city and running one ÔÇö Astapor and Yunkai were spectacle, chains struck and crowds cheering; Meereen is the unglamorous aftermath, an economy that ran on slavery now expected to run on hope instead, and it is failing in ways no army can fix. HazzeaÔÇÖs death is the harder blow: Drogon, the one dragon still flying free, is no longer a symbol of liberation but a monster that eats children, and DaenerysÔÇÖs grief for a girl she never met is tangled up with the dawning knowledge that her power has outgrown her ability to control it. The queen who broke chains now has to answer for what she canÔÇÖt leash.
