Bran Stark’s road north of the Wall continues under the guidance of Coldhands, a silent, black-handed ranger who leads Bran, Meera and Jojen Reed, Hodor and the direwolf Summer through a country gone wrong — abandoned villages, untouched food gone to rot, the sense of eyes in every treeline. Coldhands eats nothing, sleeps not at all, and answers questions only when he chooses to, which is rarely; whatever he is, he was a man of the Night’s Watch once, and something else since. Summer’s nose keeps finding what the humans can’t see, and what he finds is never good news.

This is travelogue as dread — a landscape stripped of the manners and politics that structure the rest of the book, replaced by something older and far less negotiable. Every chapter of Bran’s journey narrows the story’s aperture toward a single destination, the three-eyed crow, and widens, at the same time, the reader’s sense of how much of the world’s real danger has nothing to do with crowns. Coldhands himself is the chapter’s quiet mystery, a dead man’s courtesy wearing a live man’s purpose, and the book declines, for now, to explain him.
