A Dance with Dragons ÔÇö Theon IV
Theon and Jeyne leap from Winterfell's battlements into the snow and the dark ÔÇö the kraken's broken son remembering his name at last on the way down.
The chapter retold
The rescue AbelÔÇÖs people have been building toward finally arrives, and it does not look like triumph: Theon and Jeyne Poole, cornered on WinterfellÔÇÖs battlements with nowhere left to run and RamsayÔÇÖs hunt closing in below, choose the wall over the wolves. They leap together into the dark and the snow, a fall that could easily kill them both, and in the plunge ÔÇö stripped of every plan, every rescuer, every certainty except the ground rushing up ÔÇö TheonÔÇÖs mind finally does the one thing months of torture couldnÔÇÖt beat out of him for good: it remembers his own name.
The chapter is deliberately anticlimactic as a rescue and enormous as a character resolution ÔÇö no triumphant escort out the gates, no clean getaway, just two desperate people choosing an uncertain death over a certain horror, and finding, in that choice, something like agency again. TheonÔÇÖs reclamation of his name mid-fall is the payoff of everything the Reek chapters put the reader through: not a heroÔÇÖs return but a survivorÔÇÖs last honest act, undertaken with no guarantee of living to enjoy it.
Whether the fall kills them is left entirely open, which is its own kind of statement ÔÇö the book has spent an enormous amount of its cruelty on Theon Greyjoy, and it declines, at the moment that cruelty might finally end, to promise the reader anything at all. WhatÔÇÖs certain is that RamsayÔÇÖs rule over Winterfell now has a hole in it exactly the shape of a missing hostage bride, and that hole is about to matter enormously to everyone converging on the castle.
