Septa Unella

A stern, implacable septa of the Faith Militant, tireless in her duty of penance and confession, ringing her bell and intoning her single word: shame.

A soul born at The Faith, sworn to The Faith of the Seven.

The fuller tale

How it ends for them

The chronicle records no death for this soul ÔÇö they are living when the tale leaves them, or their ending is a page the maesters have yet to turn.

Their chapters, book by book

Where the page and the screen part

Book Unella exists mostly as a plural: she is one of three septas ÔÇö Unella, Moelle and Scolera ÔÇö who share the custody and catechizing of Cersei in the novels, her personality merged with her sisters' into a single grinding apparatus of scripture and sleeplessness, and the walk's tolling bell belongs to the trio's escort rather than one iconic face. The show consolidated the committee into a character, as it habitually does, and then invented her entire second act: the wine-boarding scene and Cersei's slow-spoken confession over her are television's own, since in the books the Faith still stands and its septas remain unpunished custodians awaiting the queen's trial. Neither telling grants her a fate on the page or screen ÔÇö the books leave her on duty, and the show leaves her in that room, the door closing on whatever the Mountain's patience looks like ÔÇö an ending withheld so deliberately that the withholding is the point.

Their journey

Where the two tellings send them to the same place the road runs whole; where they part, the screen keeps the left and the books the right.
