His role, his temple, and most of his best lines were folded into Jaqen HÔÇÖghar, whose familiar face gave the screen version of the House of Black and White a recognizable master ÔÇö a defensible economy that nonetheless cost the story its eeriest teacher and collapsed the booksÔÇÖ distinction between the priest who tests Arya and the assassin who owes her. Readers of the novels also carry a suspicion the show never needed: that a man who changes faces professionally and takes an unusual interest in a Stark girlÔÇÖs education may be more entangled in the wider game ÔÇö the Citadel, the coin, the orderÔÇÖs purposes ÔÇö than his kindliness admits.
