S1┬ÀE7 ÔÇö You Win or You Die
The hour retold
Cersei names the game in a garden, and the hour spends its whole length proving her right. Ned, holding proof that her children are JaimeÔÇÖs, does the most Ned thing imaginable: he tells her what he knows and gives her time to run ÔÇö mercy extended to the one player who will never return it. Then a boar opens the king on his hunt, and the clock starts. Robert dictates a will naming Ned protector of the realm until ÔÇ£my sonÔÇØ comes of age; Ned, writing, quietly amends it to ÔÇ£my rightful heir,ÔÇØ a correction that is both entirely honest and entirely useless, because paper is only power when someone with swords agrees it is.
Everyone offers Ned a way to win. Renly offers a coup by night with a hundred swords; Littlefinger offers the gold cloaks and a brokered peace with the boy on the throne; Ned refuses both, because one is treason and the other is dishonor, and walks into the throne room with RobertÔÇÖs will in his hand. Cersei tears it in half and LittlefingerÔÇÖs knife arrives at NedÔÇÖs throat with an apology ÔÇö he did warn him not to trust him. Meanwhile the storyÔÇÖs other futures lock in: Jon swears his vows before a heart tree and learns stewarding may be a promotion in disguise, and in Essos a winesellerÔÇÖs clumsy poison attempt turns DrogoÔÇÖs vague westward ambitions into a khalÔÇÖs blood-vow. You win or you die, she said. The board is now exactly that simple.
