S2┬ÀE1 ÔÇö The North Remembers
The hour retold
A red comet drags itself across the sky and everyone reads it as a personal endorsement ÔÇö Lannister crimson, Stark vengeance, dragonÔÇÖs breath ÔÇö which is the season in miniature: five kings, one omen, and no referee. The premiereÔÇÖs real business is introducing the man who thinks arithmetic settles it. On a beach at Dragonstone, Stannis Baratheon burns the Seven and watches a red priestess pull a flaming sword from the fire; then he dictates a letter to every corner of the realm announcing what Ned Stark died knowing ÔÇö Joffrey is no Baratheon ÔÇö and haggles over a single word of it. Not my beloved brother, he corrects. He was not beloved of me. That is Stannis: the rightful heir, with the charm of a ledger and the persistence of one too.
In the capital, Tyrion arrives whistling to take up the Handship his father assigned him, greets his sister with cheerful malice, and begins the seasonÔÇÖs most entertaining project: running a kingdom for a king who should be in a cell. The cruelty he is there to manage announces itself immediately ÔÇö CerseiÔÇÖs order (or JoffreyÔÇÖs; the show lets the guilt smear) sends gold cloaks to butcher RobertÔÇÖs bastards in the city, babies included, a purge that sharpens the stakes of every secret Ned died for. Far east, the counterweight: Daenerys leads a starving remnant through the red waste, her three dragons too small to feed anyone, learning the gap between the mother of dragons and a queen of anything. The comet, whatever it means, feeds no one either.
