S4┬ÀE6 ÔÇö The Laws of Gods and Men
The hour retold
The laws of gods and men, weighed and found negotiable. The episode opens in Braavos, inside the Iron Bank at last ÔÇö Stannis and Davos across a very long table from Tycho Nestoris, learning that the rightful heir of Westeros rates below a solvent one. It is Davos who saves the meeting, four shortened fingertips on the table as collateral of character: his king pays his debts, in full, personally. The bank votes with the ledger. At the Dreadfort, Yara GreyjoyÔÇÖs raid reaches her brotherÔÇÖs kennel and founders on something worse than RamsayÔÇÖs knives ÔÇö Reek, cowering from rescue, biting the hand that came for him. My brother is dead, she tells her crew, and it is diagnosis, not eulogy.
The back half is the trial of Tyrion Lannister, and it is theater with a script: Meryn Trant, Pycelle and Varys recite curated truths; Cersei conducts; Tywin presides with the verdict pre-signed. The ambush is Shae ÔÇö the one witness who knew him ÔÇö reading out their intimacies twisted into evidence, and something in Tyrion audibly breaks. What follows is the seriesÔÇÖ single greatest courtroom scene: he confesses, not to the murder, but to being a dwarf, on trial for it his whole life; tells the court he wishes he had let Stannis burn them all; and torches the script with the only move left ÔÇö I demand a trial by combat. TywinÔÇÖs face is the punchline: the machine built to crush his son has just been handed back to the gods, and the gods, in this city, take bribes.
What happens
- Stannis and Davos ask the Iron Bank for gold; the ledger votes Stannis.
- Yara raids the Dreadfort for Theon and finds Reek in a kennel who won't come.
- Tyrion's trial is theater with a script; Shae's testimony is the cruelest line.
- "I demand a trial by combat." The dwarf declines the script.
