S5·E4 — Sons of the Harpy
The hour retold
The Faith Militant, armed and unshackled, discovers what teeth feel like: Loras Tyrell is dragged off for his private life and Tommen, the gentlest king the show has offered, discovers that a crown confers no actual power over men who answer to a higher and angrier authority — he bounces off the sept’s doors like a boy locked out of his own house. It is the season’s bluntest lesson about institutions: the ones you arm to fight your enemies rarely stay pointed only at them. In Dorne, Jaime and Bronn wade ashore on a rescue mission that is really an apology in disguise, while the Sand Snakes conduct their war council over Oberyn’s grave, voting for vengeance the old-fashioned way — with spears rather than patience.
The hour’s two tenderest scenes sit uneasily beside its cruelest. Stannis, asked by his daughter about the greyscale that scarred her, gives Shireen the only kind of love he has ever known how to offer — not comfort, but honesty, and the plain, furious statement that he fought for her life when doctors had given up on it. It is as close as the show lets him come to warmth, which makes what the season eventually asks of him almost unbearable in hindsight. In Meereen, the Sons of the Harpy finally draw blood that matters: an ambush in the tunnels wounds Grey Worm and kills Barristan Selmy, the last knight of the old Kingsguard, cut down not in some legendary last stand but jumped in an alley by masked cowards — a death the show refuses to dignify with music, because that is the whole point of it.
