The hour retold
Winterfell buries its dead and then, almost indecently fast, gets back to arguing about politics — the victory feast curdles within minutes, every toast a thin disguise for the succession question nobody has actually resolved: whose army, whose dragons, whose throne, now that the thing they were all supposedly fighting for is settled. Jon tells his sisters the truth about his birth beneath the heart tree that just witnessed a war fought partly to protect him, and Sansa, unable to hold the secret the way Jon asked her to, passes it to Tyrion within the hour — the first domino in a chain the season will spend its remaining episodes toppling.
The war against the living reasserts itself with brutal, deliberate cruelty. Euron Greyjoy’s hidden fleet ambushes Daenerys’s ships off Dragonstone with scorpion bolts built specifically to kill dragons, and Rhaegal — wounded again and again before anyone below decks even understands what is happening — falls burning into the sea, the second of Dany’s children lost to a weapon designed in direct response to what she is. On the walls of King’s Landing, Cersei’s answer to the alliance’s ultimatum is theater staged for maximum cruelty: Missandei of Naath, born a slave and freed by the woman she serves, is beheaded in chains in full view of the queen who loves her, her final word not a plea but a command — Dracarys — a woman spending her last breath handing her queen permission for exactly the fury the finale will not let go unanswered.
