Few houses own their low reputation as frankly as the Codds, whose words are the extraordinary Though All Men Do Despise Us. The other ironborn hold that the Codds descend not from a conqueror but from a thrall ÔÇö a slave ÔÇö and a salt wife, and in a culture obsessed with the Old Way and the iron price, no insult cuts deeper.

And yet the Codds endure, and turn up in the reaving fleets and at the kingsmoots regardless, a house that has decided the world's contempt is simply weather to be sailed through. Ser Harras Harlaw's man-at-arms and the odd Codd captain crop up in the recent histories, despised and undeterred.
