House Dayne

An ancient Dornish house at Starfall on the Torentine, keepers of the pale sword Dawn and the title that goes with it ÔÇö Sword of the Morning.

The fuller tale

House Dayne is older than the Andals and older than the kings, and unlike any other house in Westeros it carries a Valyrian-quality blade that is not Valyrian at all: Dawn, forged from the heart of a fallen star, milk-pale and impossibly sharp. Dawn is not handed down like an ordinary heirloom. Only a Dayne judged worthy may wield it, and that knight takes the title Sword of the Morning ÔÇö a distinction rare enough that centuries can pass between one and the next.

The most famous of them was Ser Arthur Dayne, the finest knight of his age, who wore the white cloak of Aerys's Kingsguard and died at the Tower of Joy at the end of Robert's Rebellion ÔÇö cut down, the histories say, by Eddard Stark and his companions, though the manner of it is a wound the North does not like to reopen. His sister Ashara Dayne, a beauty spoken of long after her death, and the shadow of what happened at that tower, hang over the house still. Starfall keeps Dawn, and waits for the next worthy hand.
