The fuller tale

House Gaunt takes its place among the small landed houses of the Crownlands sworn to the Iron Throne. Little of their story survives in the great chronicles; like their neighbours they are a house whose worth is told in the swords they can raise for their king rather than in songs, the sort of quiet name that has served whatever dynasty sat the throne through changes of colour and cloak.
