The fuller tale

Bandallon stands on the Reach's southwestern coast above the Redwyne Straits, where House Blackbar keeps one of the watch-seats that ring the realm's richest sea lane. The straits below carry the Arbor's wine and Oldtown's trade, which means they also carry, in the bad centuries, the longships that come for both ÔÇö and the Blackbars' purpose has always been to see the sails early and light the fires. It is unglamorous work punctuated by history's worst days, and the tale's later movements bring one of those seasons close: with the ironborn loose under a crow's eye king, the books leave every seat on this coast watching the horizon the old way. Bandallon endures as it always has, a name on the muster rolls and a light on the cliffs.
