Brightwater Keep
Seat of the fox-eared Florents, forever insisting Highgarden should be theirs.
The fuller tale
Brightwater Keep is the seat of House Florent, whose fox-eared banners fly over the best claim to Highgarden that will never be honored. The Florents descend from the Gardener kings by lines they can recite backward, and the fact that Aegon handed the Reach to the Tyrell stewards instead has been the family grievance for three hundred years ÔÇö nursed at every wedding, aired at every council, and priced into every alliance the foxes make. It sends them, in the tale, to the one king who cares about rightful claims: the Florents are the spine of Stannis's cause, his queen is one of theirs, and Brightwater's levies freeze and burn beside him from the Blackwater to the northern snows.
The bill arrives promptly. Attainted for treason after the Blackwater, the Florents watch their ancient seat handed to a Tyrell son as a wedding favor ÔÇö the steward's family now granting Gardener land to its own cadets, an irony sharp enough to shave with. The books scatter the foxes to their fates: one uncle to the Wall's justice, another to the fires of the red god's zealots, the rest to exile or the snow. Brightwater Keep itself sits out the wars in comfort, well garrisoned and well tended, waiting to learn which of its claimants history will leave alive.
