The fuller tale

CleganeÔÇÖs Keep is a modest towerhouse in the hills southeast of the Rock, and its founding is pure Westerlands arithmetic: a kennelmaster saved Lord Tytos Lannister from a lioness at the cost of a leg and three dogs, and was paid with lands, a keep and a shield bearing three dogs on a field of autumn. Two generations from the kennels to knighthood ÔÇö a success story, until you meet the grandsons.

The keepÔÇÖs true legacy is the story the household never told: a toy taken, a boyÔÇÖs face held to the brazier, and a family that explained the burns as bedding catching fire. Gregor and Sandor Clegane ÔÇö the realmÔÇÖs most feared knight and the brother he mutilated ÔÇö are the keepÔÇÖs exports, and the tale treats the little towerhouse as the seedbed of a lifelong argument about what knighthood is worth: one brother a knight and a monster, the other monstrous-looking, unknighted, and by the end something very like true.
