Clegane's Keep
The modest towerhouse of the Cleganes — kennelmasters raised to knighthood, whose sons grew anything but modest.
The fuller tale
Clegane’s Keep is a modest towerhouse in the hills southeast of the Rock, and its founding is pure Westerlands arithmetic: a kennelmaster saved Lord Tytos Lannister from a lioness at the cost of a leg and three dogs, and was paid with lands, a keep and a shield bearing three dogs on a field of autumn. Two generations from the kennels to knighthood — a success story, until you meet the grandsons.
The keep’s true legacy is the story the household never told: a toy taken, a boy’s face held to the brazier, and a family that explained the burns as bedding catching fire. Gregor and Sandor Clegane — the realm’s most feared knight and the brother he mutilated — are the keep’s exports, and the tale treats the little towerhouse as the seedbed of a lifelong argument about what knighthood is worth: one brother a knight and a monster, the other monstrous-looking, unknighted, and by the end something very like true.
