Evenfall Hall

Seat of House Tarth

Seat of the Tarths on the Sapphire Isle, said to be the loveliest island in the narrow sea.

The fuller tale

Evenfall Hall is the seat of House Tarth on the island the songs call the Sapphire Isle ÔÇö for the astonishing blue of its waters, not for gems, a distinction on which a great deal of the tale's best subplot ends up hanging. Tarth sits in the narrow sea off the stormlands coast, mountains and waterfalls and pastures folded into an island lovely enough that even Westerosi cynics concede the point, and its lords ÔÇö styled the Evenstar, a title older than memory ÔÇö claim descent from both Storm Kings and, more improbably, the Durrandon line's divine grief. It is a small, old, honorable house at the edge of everything, which turns out to be exactly the soil that grows its famous daughter.

Brienne is Evenfall's only living heir ÔÇö a lonely girl who outgrew every suitor her father found, was mocked at the dances the island threw for her, and left to follow a king who had once, at one of those dances, simply been kind. The island's name saves her life on the road: her captor spares her from rape and mutilation partly on the strength of a lie about sapphires, coined from her home's misnomer. Evenfall Hall itself stays offstage in both tellings ÔÇö an aging Evenstar keeping a hall short one daughter ÔÇö but it is the standing answer to anyone puzzled by Brienne's unfashionable decency. Somewhere off the stormlands coast there is an island where the water is impossibly blue and oaths are still taken literally; she is what it exports.
