The fuller tale

Godsgrace sits where the Greenblood gathers its two branches, in the richest soil Dorne owns ÔÇö the name is a farmer's honest astonishment, and House Allyrion's gilded hand on its banners has held the river-junction for centuries under a motto that is pure border arithmetic: No Foe May Pass. Wheat, olives, citrus and the river trade make the Allyrions wealthy by any kingdom's measure and essential by Dorne's; armies march on the Greenblood's grain, and Sunspear knows precisely whose fields fill the granaries. The house's best-known son in the tale is a bastard with a knight's fame ÔÇö the Bastard of Godsgrace, once squire to the Red Viper and rather more than that to a princess of Dorne, whose name surfaces wherever the books' Dornish intrigues need a sword that can be trusted. The river runs green past the walls, the hand on the banners stays open, and the foe, to date, has not passed.
