The fuller tale

The Golden Tooth is small, strong and priceless: the castle that corks the one good pass between the riverlands and the west. Its Lefford lords collect tolls in peace and consequence in war, because no army enters or leaves the Westerlands in strength without settling with the Tooth first. It is the westÔÇÖs front door, and the Lannisters have always kept it well hinged.

The war shows the door swinging both ways. JaimeÔÇÖs host smashes the riverlords at the Tooth in the opening campaign, pouring through to put the riverlands to the sword; later Robb Stark declines the door entirely, threading his army over goat tracks around it to fall on the west from behind ÔÇö the campaign that proved the young wolfÔÇÖs legend and the ToothÔÇÖs one limitation: it only guards the road it can see.
