The fuller tale

Goldengrove takes its name from the great golden tree on the Rowan banners, and House Rowan takes its standing from being the sort of family every faction wants and none can take for granted ÔÇö old blood, broad lands in the northern Reach, and a tradition of level heads in a region that breeds hot ones. In the tale its lord is the Reach's designated reasonable man: present in Renly's pavilions, present at the capital's councils after the Blackwater, valued precisely because his support means the sensible lords are satisfied. Goldengrove itself keeps out of the fighting, which is not luck but the family craft ÔÇö the Rowans have survived Gardeners, dragons, and every ambitious neighbor by understanding that in the Reach the winning side is usually the one that eats.
