The fuller tale

Gulltown is the Vale’s window on the sea — its only city, a busy port under Grafton rule at the mouth of a deep harbor, where the mountain kingdom does its trading and hears its news. It is modest by the standards of Oldtown or King’s Landing, but the Vale likes it that way; wealth enough to matter, never enough to tempt.

The city carries two stories. In Robert’s Rebellion it was the first battlefield — Jon Arryn had to storm his own port when the Graftons held it for the crown, and Robert himself slew Lord Grafton in the fighting, the rebellion’s opening invoice. And it was in Gulltown’s customs sheds that a minor lordling named Petyr Baelish, exiled from Riverrun with a scar and a grudge, multiplied a port’s revenues so spectacularly that Jon Arryn brought him to court — the most consequential personnel decision in the story, made over a ledger.
