The fuller tale

Maidenpool is a port town on the Bay of Crabs that had the misfortune to be named for the prettiest legend in Westeros and located on the road of every army in the riverlands. The songs say Florian the Fool first beheld Jonquil bathing here with her sisters, and the pool that made the town's name and fortune still draws the sentimental; House Mooton keeps its seat above the harbor and has learned, over centuries of other people's wars, the river-lord's essential skill of surviving whoever arrives next. The town's walls are modest, its bathhouse famous, and its luck historically poor.

The war years prove the point with a grim thoroughness the books linger on: sacked and burned and sacked again as the fighting sloshes back and forth across the Trident's country, Maidenpool becomes shorthand for what the game of thrones costs the people who never got a seat at the table. Order returns at last under a Reach lord's heavy hand ÔÇö gallows justice administered from the town's gates, the harbor reopened for a royal wedding's traffic ÔÇö and travelers bound for the Vale and stranger destinations pass through a town relearning how to be one. Even then the songs persist. That is Maidenpool's quiet argument: the armies always leave, and Florian and Jonquil, absurdly, remain.
