A hill city of bells and bearded priests above the Noyne.

The fuller tale

Norvos stands in two pieces on the hills above the Noyne ÔÇö a walled upper city where the bearded priests keep their fortress-temple, and a lower city of docks and bear pits by the river, joined by a great stair. The priests rule in the name of a god whose true name is never spoken; they alone wear beards in the city, their axes are wedded to them in a rite as binding as marriage, and their tattooed guards are said to be trained from childhood to want nothing else. Life runs to the voices of the cityÔÇÖs three bells ÔÇö deep Noom, proud Narrah, silvery Nyel ÔÇö whose peals tell Norvoshi when to rise, work, pray and sleep, a city timed like a monastery and armed like a garrison.

The tale touches Norvos through its exiles. Areo Hotah, captain of Prince DoranÔÇÖs guards in far Dorne, carries a Norvoshi longaxe and a Norvoshi patience through the books, and his memories give the city its texture ÔÇö the bells, the bears dancing down the steps, the winters when the Noyne froze. He came south in the train of Mellario of Norvos, the merchantÔÇÖs daughter Doran wed for love and lost by degrees to Westerosi custom; she went home, and her homesickness runs quietly under half the Dornish plot. Norvos itself never enters the war ÔÇö but the story is careful to note that even the game of thrones is played, in places, by men keeping time to someone elseÔÇÖs bells.
