The fuller tale

Old Oak guards the sea road in the northern Reach, and House Oakheart has held it since the Age of Heroes ÔÇö their three green leaves on white are among the oldest arms in the south, and their lady in the tale rules a house prouder of its ancientness than its acreage. The seat's chief export has always been knights of the pattern the Reach likes best: brave, courteous, and a little too trusting for the company they keep. The books send the family's most famous son south with a Kingsguard cloak and a princess to protect, into a Dornish intrigue that costs him first his vows and then everything else ÔÇö a fate Old Oak learns of the way border houses always learn things from Dorne, late and badly. The oak abides; its acorns roll into other people's stories.
