The fuller tale

Salt Shore faces the Summer Sea on Dorne's southern coast, where the trade winds come up from the Stepstones and the Summer Isles, and House Gargalen ÔÇö a red cockatrice on its banners, wings spread over the door ÔÇö has held the salt pans, the harborage and the long white beaches since before the Rhoynar landed. The salty Dornish of the coasts are the principality's easiest company, sea traders with Rhoynish manners and old money, and the Gargalens fit the type: their lord is a fixture of Sunspear's councils, dry of wit and close to the Martells, and his seat's contribution to Dorne's wars has always been the coast itself ÔÇö ships provisioned, landings denied, and salt, which armies forget they need until they are dying for it. The sea does the shouting at Salt Shore; the house has never had to.
