The fuller tale

Sandstone lies a week's ride into the deep desert west of the Brimstone, and House Qorgyle — three black scorpions on red — holds the driest lordship in the Seven Kingdoms from a castle the color of its country. Life at Sandstone is wells, dates and distance; its levies are desert riders the equal of any in Dorne; and its house has a knack for turning up at history's odd corners — a Qorgyle commanded the Night's Watch a generation before the tale, and a Qorgyle son stood among the companions who followed the Red Viper north to King's Landing and his duel. The scorpions on the banners are the family's climate, character and foreign policy in one image: unglamorous, patient, and inadvisable to step on.
