The fuller tale

Sar Mell was Rhoynish once ÔÇö a river city of the people who called the great stream Mother, facing across the water toward what is now Volantene ground. It died in the old wars, when the young FreeholdÔÇÖs colonies pressed the river folk and the quarrel grew from raids to ruin; the tales say it was the sack of Sar Mell that helped light the final war, the one Prince Garin led a quarter of a million spears to lose. What remains is broken stone among the reeds, passed by every barge on the lower river and boarded by none. The RhoyneÔÇÖs banks are strewn with such places ÔÇö the fine print of ValyriaÔÇÖs victories, still legible a thousand years on.
