The fuller tale

Skyreach is the Fowlers' eyrie at the Dornish end of the Prince's Pass, towers stacked up a mountainside so that the seat seems less built than perched ÔÇö fitting for a house whose banners fly a hooded hawk and whose words are an open dare: Let Me Soar. The Fowlers were Kings of Stone and Sky before Nymeria came, and made the shrewdest bargain of the conquest era, backing the Rhoynish princess early and keeping their pass, their pride and the title Warden of the Prince's Pass as the price of a knee. The tale's Fowlers keep the old franchise ÔÇö the Old Hawk holding the western door of Dorne, twin daughters running with the Martells' restless younger generation ÔÇö and the pass keeps its ancient meaning: when Dorne finally moves, this is one of the two roads it moves by, and the hawks see everything on it first.
