The fuller tale

Stone Hedge holds the Red Fork for House Bracken, breeders of the finest horses in the riverlands and holders of the other half of WesterosÔÇÖs longest grudge ÔÇö ask at Stone Hedge and it was the Blackwoods who gave the first offense, a millennium ago, details regrettably lost but fault entirely established. The red stallion on their banner is half heraldry, half sales catalogue.

The war treats the Brackens as it treats most middling riverlords ÔÇö their lands burned by raiders, their swords spent in other menÔÇÖs causes ÔÇö and their choices afterward run truer to survival than to song: bending early when the tide turns, and promptly aiming the new allegiance at Raventree Hall. The feud, the story drily notes, outlasts every kingdom that ever tried to referee it.
