The fuller tale

Tyria was OrosÔÇÖs sister in glory and is its sister in ruin ÔÇö a city of the Valyrian heartland, lost in the hours of the Doom when the peninsulaÔÇÖs fourteen volcanoes opened at once and the proudest civilization the world has known was subtracted from it. The books name Tyria among the cities the catastrophe took, and the naming is nearly all that survives: its walls are under the Smoking SeaÔÇÖs hazards now, its arts and archives ash, its people a statistic four centuries old. The tale keeps such names deliberately. Valyria the idea ÔÇö the steel, the roads, the dragon blood ÔÇö lives all through the story; Tyria is the reminder of the price on the other side of the ledger, a whole city reduced to an entry in the worldÔÇÖs memory of one bad day.
