The fuller tale

Vaith takes its name from the river it sits on ÔÇö or gave its name to it; the family and the geography have been entangled too long for anyone to swear which came first ÔÇö where the red sands begin in earnest and the Greenblood's southern branch is the only argument against them. House Vaith's lordship is the classic desert-edge holding: date palms and irrigation where the river consents, red emptiness where it does not, and a seat whose value is the crossing itself, the last water on the road into the deep sand. Its lords are counted among the desert Dornish, the spear-first branch of the principality's temperament, and the tale keeps them where geography put them ÔÇö between Sunspear and the sand, holding the door the desert knocks on.
