The fuller tale

Valysar is one of the beads on the Volantene string — a river town on the great Rhoyne between Selhorys and Volon Therys, living by the barge trade, the fisheries and the tribute it owes the triarchs downstream. The Shy Maid poles past it in Tyrion’s long voyage south, one more huddle of quays and orchards under the vast river sky; the books grant it no adventure, which is its own kind of portrait. Towns like Valysar are what empire looks like from below — taxed by a city they will never enter, guarded against horselords they hope never to see, and feeding everyone’s wars with grain and rivermen while the story’s dragons pass far overhead.
