The fuller tale

Valysar is one of the beads on the Volantene string ÔÇö a river town on the great Rhoyne between Selhorys and Volon Therys, living by the barge trade, the fisheries and the tribute it owes the triarchs downstream. The Shy Maid poles past it in TyrionÔÇÖs long voyage south, one more huddle of quays and orchards under the vast river sky; the books grant it no adventure, which is its own kind of portrait. Towns like Valysar are what empire looks like from below ÔÇö taxed by a city they will never enter, guarded against horselords they hope never to see, and feeding everyoneÔÇÖs wars with grain and rivermen while the storyÔÇÖs dragons pass far overhead.
