The fuller tale

Widow’s Watch stands at the tip of the North’s easternmost cape, staring out over the Shivering Sea, and its name is its whole biography: generations of women watching gray water for sails that did not come back. The Flints who hold it are one branch of the North’s most scattered house — Flints in the mountains, Flints on the Finger, Flints here at the edge of the map — and the seat’s solitude is the point. Someone has to watch the empty quarter of the compass, and the North long ago decided it would be the widows.
