The fuller tale

WidowÔÇÖs Watch stands at the tip of the NorthÔÇÖs easternmost cape, staring out over the Shivering Sea, and its name is its whole biography: generations of women watching gray water for sails that did not come back. The Flints who hold it are one branch of the NorthÔÇÖs most scattered house ÔÇö Flints in the mountains, Flints on the Finger, Flints here at the edge of the map ÔÇö and the seatÔÇÖs solitude is the point. Someone has to watch the empty quarter of the compass, and the North long ago decided it would be the widows.
